Let’s Go More In Depth About

Our Action

NOW’s action framework focuses on addressing the real, measurable pollutants released through outdoor recreation—specifically PFAS, microplastics, bisphenols, textile coatings, and polymer fragments that enter snowpacks and mountain watersheds. Our programs combine research, education, industry collaboration, and public engagement to reduce chemical contamination without compromising performance or outdoor culture.

NOW Conscious List

Our approved list recognizes brands, shops, and organizations committed to transitioning away from pollutant-based products and are helping contribute to cleaner outdoor environments. It highlights transparency, safer chemistry, and a reduction in gear-related pollutants.

Research

Our research centers on identifying how outdoor gear contributes to contamination. We study PFAS pathways from gear, DWR coatings, synthetic textiles, and plastics used. We analyze how pollutants enter the wilderness and snow, move through meltwater, bind to microplastics, and accumulate in alpine lakes and streams making their way into watersheds and eventually drinking systems.

Campaigns

NOW runs targeted campaigns to address high-impact pollutant sources. Our flagship Campaign focuses on helping skiers and riders adopt PFAS-free wax, bringing wax brands, shops, and resorts together for education, demos, and community outreach. Additional campaigns address consumer education, textile shedding, microplastic awareness, shop-level awareness training, brand and manufacturing recognition.

Ready To Make a Difference NOW?

Get Involved

NOW provides opportunities for individuals, shops, and brands to contribute to cleaner outdoor experiences. Volunteers assist with field sampling, outreach events, and committee roles. Shops and resorts can participate in training programs, while brands can collaborate on safer chemistry initiatives.
